Tell Us About Yourself:

Jans Veldkamp, 36. Currently I work as a Director of Corporate Development in the Chemical Industry with a family of three kids. I play hockey and practice Jiu Jitsu for hobbies, and also like to coach my kids in soccer and basketball.


How Long Have You Been a Member at Cityside and What Made You Start CrossFit?

I decided to start CrossFit at the beginning of the year (2018) after for years attempting other fitness methods, such as running, lifting at 'traditional' gyms, etc... didn't seem to be getting the fitness results that I wanted. I play ice hockey and practice Jiu Jitsu as a hobby, and was struggling with my endurance through games. This was extremely frustrating that I wasn't able to move like I thought that I should, and I knew that I needed to try something different. Life can get pretty busy with family and work, so it is extremely important that I get the most out of the little time I can carve out for fitness. I have found that CrossFit is a great solution.


What Do You Enjoy Most About Cityside?

I like that the coaches very much take an interest in making sure that you get the most out of the workouts. They push you to the limit with varying workouts, and trying to make sure that you don't sandbag and cheat.

I also like that they want to ensure that we prevent injury by ensuring that we warm up and stretch appropriately before jumping in to the workout, and that they ensure that you are performing the movements with the right form.


What Goals/Accomplishments Have You Achieved Since Joining?

For me there was a very clear 'test' of the value of CrossFit in the first six weeks of attending. I had played a hockey game in early January, with poor results compared to my expectations. I had a hard time even keeping up with my team for a quick two minute shift. Because of that, I took a break from hockey for a while and focused on CrossFit. After about six weeks of being punished three times a week by the Hannah's and Leila (in a good way!), I went back to play a game of hockey and noticed a huge difference, that I wasn't feeling out of breath at all! I'll never be Sidney Crosby, but at least I could exceed my own personal expectations, and don't have fitness level as a limitation in my sport! The high intensity, explosive training in CrossFit very much parallels the back and forth sprinting in hockey, so this is the perfect training regime for someone involved in these sort of sports.


Do You Have Any Future Goals (Fitness, Health, Career, Personal etc.?)

In the short term, I'd like to continue to work on getting my form right for some of the lifting moves I have never really been exposed to (such as Snatches, right coaches?! :) ) I'd also like to be able to work on managing my diet, as right now I have a tendency of letting my sweet tooth get the better of me. Longer term I'd like to be able to get to the point where I can do all of the conditioning sections of the workouts at the Rx levels. I'd also like to be able to figure out how to do Bar Muscle Ups. You all at the gym that can do one, much less 20 at a time, are impressive!!
